1. 十九世紀中葉，五口通商的結果使廣州成爲中國人從實用角度開始學習英語的最早地方。當時在廣州出現了一本英語教科書，叫做《鬼話》（Devil's Talk）。其實，這部旨在教中國人學習英語的課本不過是一種粗淺的、用漢語注音的英語詞彙入門書。例如：把today 注爲“土地”，把man注爲“曼”。1884年上海的點石齋石印了一本可以被稱之爲最早的英語900句的會話書，書名叫《無師自通英語錄》。這部書突破了《鬼話》只以單詞爲核心的編排方式，而代之以譯成漢語的英文句子爲核心。當然，它仍採用漢語的字詞來標註英文的讀音。例如：How many chapters are there in this book？ 這句英文被注成了“好美呢卻迫忒兒司阿兒則兒意因祭司不克”。另外，英文在上海更發展成了以通俗的、類似打油詩一樣壓韻的竹枝詞爲載體的不乏趣味的“洋涇浜”英語，這就是所謂的“別琴”竹枝詞。“別琴”這兩個字原本是英文business（生意）的近似漢語讀音，後來英國人惡意地取笑這種不準確的讀音，於是就用pidgin這個發音相近的英文詞來表示胡編亂造的、不規範、不準確的英文。Pidgin English便成了“洋涇浜英語”的代稱。舉個例子博大家一笑：“清晨相見好貓迎（早上見面說good morning），好度油圖噓闊情（相互問候說how do you do）；若不從中市歸市（squeeze，意思是敲詐），如何覓市叫先生（先生爲Mr.）。”

2. 從英語習得史的角度看，在這一英語學習的“啓蒙期”，中國人學習英語的方法特點是：（1）完全以字爲中心，簡略之極；（2）完全以漢文化的生存實境來強迫英文就範。換句話說就是：“字本位”，中學爲體，西學爲用，“以中制夷”。只是，依照這樣的方法學出來的英文真難爲了洋鬼子。

3. 1898年，一個名叫馬建中的人出版了一部影響巨大的著作——《馬氏文通》。這是國人寫的第一部漢語語法書，以歐洲語言的所謂“葛郎瑪”（grammar）來系統地解釋古漢語的文言文。“葛郎瑪”這樣一種總結語言規律的方法被馬建中拿來“以夷制中”，使國人茅塞頓開地感受到漢語文言文亦有語言“規律”可循。從英語習得史的角度看，進入這一以“句本位”爲特徵的英語學習的“理解期”後，中國人學習英語的方法一變而爲強調“語法”，即注意力轉向到英文詞與詞之間的“構成關係”上，重視完整的句子，旨在理解英文的“意義結構”。對於“啓蒙期”而言，無疑這是一次英語學習方法上的革命
