brother指“兄”或“弟”皆可，“兄”是“elder brother”，“弟”是“younger brother”。但除了必須分清是“兄”還是“弟”時外，習慣上不論“兄”還是“弟”，都用brother。

在美國通常不用elder brother，而用older brother。與brother相對應的陰性名詞是sister。
